Day One is one of the best-known journal apps, and for good reason. It has been around for over a decade, it's polished, and it runs almost everywhere. If you're reading this, you're probably looking for a Day One alternative and wondering whether a newer, video-first app like Happy Reasons fits you better.
Here is an honest comparison. We make Happy Reasons, so we've stuck to facts you can check, linked Day One's own documentation, and been clear about where Day One is the better pick.

Choose Day One if you mostly write, you want rich text, templates and printed books, or you need apps on Android, Mac and Windows today.
Choose Happy Reasons if you'd rather talk than type. It's designed around a short daily video, it lets you record much longer videos, video journaling is free, and Pro costs less.

Day One details are from its pricing, media and encryption guides, linked in the sources below. Prices are in US dollars and may differ in your country.
Video journaling
This is the biggest difference.
In Day One, video is an attachment to an entry. It's available on the paid Silver and Gold plans, and each video can be up to 5 minutes long. That works well for adding a clip to a written entry.
In Happy Reasons, the video is the entry. You open the app, record, and you're done. Videos can run up to 30 minutes, so a long talk-it-through session on a hard day isn't cut off. Each entry is transcribed on your phone, so your journal becomes searchable text, and the transcripts are encrypted like everything else. Video journaling is included on the free plan.
If you've tried writing a journal and kept stalling, speaking is often easier to keep up. We cover the trade-offs in video journal vs written journal.
Privacy and encryption
Both apps take privacy seriously, and both use end-to-end encryption.
Day One encrypts journals end-to-end when they sync through Day One Sync. New journals are encrypted by default on recent versions, and older journals can't be converted in place, according to its encryption FAQ.
Happy Reasons encrypts every video, photo and transcript on your device, with a key derived from your password, before anything is stored. We can't watch your videos or read your transcripts. On the free plan, your journal stays on your device. Pro adds encrypted cloud backup so you can restore it on a new phone.
One difference worth knowing: Day One's free plan includes cloud backup. Happy Reasons' free plan doesn't, so if you lose your phone without Pro, your entries go with it.
Mood tracking and reflection
Both apps can attach the weather and your location to an entry, and both offer daily prompts.
Happy Reasons adds a mood check-in to every entry, shown as a smiley, and builds a calendar of how your weeks felt. Over time, the insights show patterns between your mood and context like weather, place and activity. Day One records similar context and offers a Mood Tracker template, but it doesn't have built-in mood check-ins or mood insights.
Day One's Gold plan adds optional AI features such as Daily Chat and reflective summaries. Happy Reasons doesn't have an AI chat. Its transcription runs on your phone, so your recordings aren't sent to a server to be transcribed.
Community
Happy Reasons has something Day One doesn't: the happy wall. You can share a small reason that made you smile today and read what's bringing joy to people around the world. Happy reasons are public by design, and they are completely separate from your journal entries, which stay private.
Day One supports shared journals with people you invite, which is a different idea: a private journal for a small group.
Pricing
Day One's Basic plan is free, with one photo per entry and no video. Silver is $49.99 a year and Gold is $74.99 a year. Day One doesn't offer monthly billing.
Happy Reasons is free to use on mobile, including video journaling. Pro is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and adds unlimited encrypted cloud backup, multi-device access and the web app. See pricing for details.
Platforms
Day One wins here. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and in the browser.
Happy Reasons is on iPhone and iPad, with a web app for Pro members. Android is on the way.
